SOUTHERN STAR, INC., Honored by Department of Defense for Extraordinary Support of Employees who Serve in the National Guard and Reserve


Texas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, announced today Southern Star, Inc., Abilene, Texas, will be honored with the Patriot Award in recognition of outstanding service and continued support of the National Defense.

According to Brigadier General Eddy M. Spurgin, ESGR Texas Chari, "Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the Minute Men before them, have answered their nation's call to server. Supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation's National Guard and Reserve units."

Southern Star, Inc. was nominated for the award by Sergeant Matt Alexander, a US Army National Guard Soldier. Sergeant Alexander specifically praised Mr. David Ratliff, his supervisor, point out Sergeant Alexander had been on several temporary duty missions over the past few years. Southern Star, Inc. accepted these absences and was quick to hire military personnel. In addition to Sergeant Alexander, Southern Star employs another National Guard soldier, as well as several military veterans.

Southern Star joins with thousands of American Employers who have review and amended their current human resources policies to ensure compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA). Many employers provide outstanding support with pay differential to offset the loss of wages, and extension of health care benefits which complement coverage provided by the military when their employees are mobilized.

As the 1.3 Million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions with America's borders and beyond, ESGR will continue to be the resource for the employers of citizen warriors. ESGR advocates relevant initiatives, recognizes outstanding support, increases awareness of applicable laws, and resolves conflict between employers and service members.
